JT: Music Video Analysis - Representation

Dub Pistols – Back to Daylight

·       Watching this video Hanson would agree that there is a strong link between films and music videos. Back to Daylight has a narrative about a relationship between a young man and his mother. They obviously have a complicated relationship; moreover the narrative is important as it shows the bridge that links the depth of narrative from films to music videos.

·        Furthermore in the video the relationship is the focal point of it all. Goffman’s view that women are typically depicted in a subordinate, male pleasing role is not shown in this video at all. The woman in this video is represented in a motherly role, concerning and protective over her son. Back to Daylight does not reinforce sexism, like many other popular culture music videos do promoting an artificial look, dismemberment of women, commodification and objectification of females.

·       The boy looks like he is trying to take his mind away from the issue, by skating. However inevitably he cannot escape the problem and has to confront the topic, we can tell he is troubled as he looks into the distance deep in thought. Contradicting the stereotypical view that younger people are inconsiderate and self-centred. Although one could also argue that the dispute could have potentially arisen from his poor behaviour or naivety.
