TH: Music Video Analysis

LA Calling- Crystal Fighters

 Representation:
·       Within this music video the band Crystal Fighters are represented using meta-narrative. This is because the video catches the band at a variety of gigs and allows the audience to get a better understanding of the bands background and aspirations.

·        As well as this immediately into the music video one of Dyer’s paradoxes becomes present; this being the both present and absent. We see this as the crowd are both close to the audience however are not close enough for the star to become real and touchable. Without the narrative and just pure performance a fabula takes place whereby each concert is in chronological order, this also introduces the second paradox of Dyer’s research. For example the band are extraordinary and are unlike a normal person, they are consumerable and famous, however the use of frequent close ups and in some case first mode of the address the fourth wall is broken, as an audience we then feel connected with the artist and see them as somewhat normal.

·       The band have used special effects which could be seen as conventional of the genre, Goodwin would acknowledge that the effects on the visuals are seen in electro and indie genres to seem authentic.

·        The social message behind this video would be to follow aspirations, as we watch the crystal fighters who have grown to become an incredibly successful band. Some camera techniques such as behind the shoulder shot allow the viewer to see the crowd and the large following for the band. Another example is the fade to blacks and cross cuts to a variety of gigs showing the popularity of the band. I think there are some references to popular culture in the way of festivals, as this music video could be seen as a tool to promote festivals.
